Lower Income Assistance
There is assistance available for singles and couples who meet the eligibility requirements for lower incomes and who have little in savings or other assets. If you think you will need extra help to help pay for a Part D plan you can apply for help through the Social Security Administration. Apply online
Depending on your level of need:
Eligibility:
Your eligibility depends on your annual income (All income from retirement benefits and other income you would report for your tax purposes) and resources. If your income is less than $14,700 for single individuals or $19,800 for a married couple living together and your assets (property besides your primary residence) are less than $11,500 if you are single or $23,000 if you are married and living with your spouse than you may qualify for extra help paying for Medicare prescription drug costs*. The amount of extra help you get is based on your income and resources.

Example:
Harold qualifies for the maximum amount of assistance from the government. He is single with an annual income of $7,500. With his Part D** coverage Harold's assistance will help him a great deal with his prescription costs.
* Example of 2006 figures. Figures may vary in Alaska and Hawaii.
** In U.S. territories Lower-income programs may vary.
